Reubens Deli, a cornerstone of London’s kosher dining scene since 1973, has reopened its doors at 79 Baker Street following a £1 million restoration after two devastating fires in 2024. The reopening marks the return of one of London’s most beloved Jewish eateries, now featuring a revamped menu and renewed kosher certification under the supervision of the Kehillas Federation (KLBD).

Now, those who had traveled to Baker Street expecting a legendary Reuben’s salt beef sandwich only to be confronted with a closed door and a short walk to Reuben’s dairy restaurant for a (very expensive) cream cheese and salmon bagel can breathe a sigh of relief.

Overcoming Adversity

The deli suffered significant damage from an electrical fire in February 2024, and while undergoing repairs, a second blaze in August 2024 caused further destruction, delaying its reopening by several months. Despite these setbacks, the S Group-operators of over a dozen kosher restaurants in London-led a comprehensive refurbishment, ensuring Reubens’ legacy would continue in the heart of the city12.

A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Reubens’ new menu retains fan favorites such as the iconic salt beef and pastrami sandwiches, classic rye bread offerings, and comforting chicken soup, while introducing freshly baked bagels and an expanded range of sandwiches. Longtime chef Manuel, with over 30 years of experience at Reubens, returns alongside Executive Chef Hodaya Cohen, formerly of the Ritz-Carlton Herzliya’s Herbert Samuel restaurant, who brings a refined culinary touch to the deli’s offerings15.

Expansion with Reubens Café & Bakery

During the deli’s closure, Reubens successfully launched Reubens Café & Bakery at 52 Baker Street, Central London’s first kosher dairy eatery. The café offers bagels, salads, pastas, pastries, and an all-day breakfast menu, quickly becoming a popular destination for kosher diners seeking casual yet high-quality options. With both venues now operating, Reubens provides a comprehensive kosher dining experience in the West End156.

A Cultural and Culinary Revival

Reubens’ reopening not only restores a cherished dining spot but also revitalizes a vital piece of London’s Jewish heritage. The deli’s refreshed lower ground floor dining space combines classic deli charm with modern updates, promising to serve both loyal patrons and new customers alike.

Reubens is located at 79 Baker Street, London, W1U 6RG, with kosher certification under KLBD supervision. Further details on opening hours and reservations are expected to be announced soon.
